Transportation

Transit for Livable Communities

Transportation is a means of gaining access to the goods and services. Access can be provided by trains, planes, buses, bicycles, private automobiles, taxi cabs, or just by walking. The most environmentally-friendly forms of transportation are walking and bicycling. Unfortunately, government spends little on these two forms of transportation in comparison with what it spends on roads and parking. Many of our new communities aren't even built with sidewalks today!

Hauling Cargo with Bikes

Author
Jim Gregory
Bikes At Work Inc.
An estimated 10,000 people ride bicycles in Minneapolis each day, mostly for recreation or to commute to work or school. But bicycles are useful for more than just carrying a single person. With the right equipment, a reasonably-fit person can move 300 lbs in addition to their own weight, making bikes a practical means of transporting cargo, too.

Bicycle Touring: Why I Travel By Bike

My first tour was almost 10 years ago. It was the first time I had been west of the center states. The transition from riding steep green mountains in Virginia to the rolling hills of Missouri, and then the open flatness of Kansas was slow (over a month of riding!) and quite amazing.

Tips for Reducing Waste While Traveling

Author

--Parts excerpted from www.reduce.org

"The less we take with us into the mountains, deserts, forests or waters, the more their spirit informs and enlivens us. We should be as reliant on our wits as much as possible and on "things" as little as possible. This means we should wear and carry as little as we can get away with while being in, and moving through, the natural world." -- Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia
