Transportation is a means of gaining access to the goods and services. Access can be provided by trains, planes, buses, bicycles, private automobiles, taxi cabs, or just by walking. The most environmentally-friendly forms of transportation are walking and bicycling. Unfortunately, government spends little on these two forms of transportation in comparison with what it spends on roads and parking. Many of our new communities aren't even built with sidewalks today!

Our more than 120 miles of bikeways, many bike amenities and strong, vibrant bicycling community has prompted Bicycling magazine to name Minneapolis as America's best bike city in its May, 2010 issue, stating that "The unforgiving and frigid city of Minneapolis is the country's top spot to be an urban cyclist." In the article, Minneapolis is noted for having a large and supportive biking community and extensive infrastructure in place for cyclists.

For the last century we have relied heavily on oil to provide energy for our transportation needs. Gasoline- and diesel-powered internal combustion engines (ICE) have monopolized as the propulsion provider for cars and trucks. They have worked fairly well for us, but we are also paying a heavy price in environmental effects. Fortunately, we are starting to explore new alternatives, and electric vehicles (EVs) are emerging as the most viable new alternative for most of our driving. Here are some reasons to consider the switch:
