Author
MICHELLE ROSIER and KATHARINA MOELLER

After an extraordinary 2007 legislative session that set Minnesota on the path to a comprehensive plan for curbing greenhouse gas emissions, the 2008 legislature encountered delays in implementing real climate change solutions. First, Governor Pawlenty's Office of Energy Security stalled release of the Minnesota Climate Change Advisory Group's recommendations for realizing the goals set in 2007.

On March 29, 2008, the Will Steger Foundation launched its second Global Warming 101 Expedition, a 62-day, 1400-mile dogsled expedition across Ellesmere Island. Explorer Will Steger selected six young adventurers to join him in an effort to educate youth, inspire international cooperation and empower the next generation of leaders in environmental advocacy.

The team travelled in Canada's High Arctic, site of the last remaining ice shelves in North America, to capture disintegrating ice caps, retreating glaciers and the destruction of wildlife habitat.

Air Pollution and Our Health

Author
By Mark Sulzbach
Minnesota Pollution Control Agency

When most people think of unhealthy air, they think of a stifling, summer day, plagued by high ozone levels and a thick layer of smog over the Twin Cities. However, Minnesota’s worst recorded air alert occurred during the winter of 2005, and ozone was not the culprit. Instead, a stagnant air mass trapped fine-particle pollution near the ground.

“Warming” Family Ideas

Author

Do It Green! Minnesota

• Lighting – replacing one 75 watt incandescent bulb with a 19-watt compact fluorescent can cut 55 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. Assign your math-loving child the task of determining how many light bulbs you need to replace and the reduction in emissions. Engage children in budgeting for purchases and replacement.

• Power strips – used for computers, televisions, radios or other electronics continually emit power even when turned off. Each night, time your children while they run around the house turning off the strips.

What Minnesotans Can Do About Climate Change

Author
Will Steger
Polar Explorer

As a Minnesotan, I am proud of our state’s can-do spirit. It gives individuals the ability to overcome challenges that may seem impossible. When I was young, this spirit is what inspired me to become an arctic explorer, and today it continues to push me toward new adventures. It is what also compels me to take a stand in the face of a crisis, and right now there is a global warming crisis brewing over the future of the planet.
