Do It Green House

About the Do It Green! House Project:

The Green Revolution is finally here! New construction projects often showcase what is possible when building green from the ground up, but what about the rest of us? What can homeowers, renters and landlords do to make existing homes more resource efficient on any budget? And what other actions can we take to reduce the environmental footprint of our daily lives?

The Do It Green Team will remodel an existing house in the Twin Cities through a series of green upgrades. The Do It Green House will be both a controlled experiment and a playground. Through interactive exhibits, a resource library, workshops and classes, visitors will see, hear, feel and measure their way to understanding the connection between our homes, our lifestyles and the environment.

We will show you how to screw in a better lightbulb.

The Do It Green House may include:

  • Weatherizing, retrofits and insulation options for older and newer houses
  • High efficiency boilers and furnaces
  • Solar, geothermal and other alternative energy options
  • Community-run garden with an edible landscape
  • Compost demonstration site
  • Water conservation devices, from low flow water fixtures to rain barrels and beyond
  • Permeable driveways and walkways
  • Nature's Kitchen with nontoxic cleaners, locally sourced food and waste reduction
  • Greener garage with Hybrid Hour Car accessible to the community
  • Resource Library with local experts and Do It Green staff on hand to help you find answers
  • Classes and workshops for school groups, community education and professional training
