New Green Media

One of the great things ushered in with the green revolution has been the concept of new green media online to get information about sustainable living out to the public. The main benefits of these online websites, e-newsletters, and blogs are that no paper is used for printing and they can be updated at a moment’s notice. There are many websites devoted to recycling, reuse, and emergent technologies in energy efficiency, environmental advocacy, sustainability, and much more. There are even Facebook.com and Myspace.com pages devoted to green events like the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Living Green Expo.

The difficulty is wading through so many new media links and opportunities to find what works best for each person or household. Conducting such a search can be confusing, so take the guesswork out of it. Here is a summary of notable new media and a few favorites submitted by local green experts in Minnesota. These sites and blogs can help you in your daily life to be healthier and more sustainable. Most of these sites have updates or e-newsletters you can subscribe to as well.

No-Cost Online Media Outlets

Facebook.com

Facebook is a global social networking website where users can add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends or followers about themselves. Additionally, users can join networks organized according to city, workplace, school, and region. The website currently has more than 300 million active users worldwide.

Myspace.com

MySpace is another social networking website. The 100 millionth MySpace account was created on August 9, 2006. You can join for free, and view profiles, connect with others, blog, rank music, post events, and gain followers on your page.

Twitter.com

Twitter started as a side project and has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices. In countries all around the world, people follow the sources most relevant to them and access information via Twitter as it happens—from breaking world news to updates from friends. “Tweets” must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web.
