Gardening Matters is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and preserving community gardening across the Twin Cities by connecting gardeners to each other and to the communities in which they reside. We provide training and resources to support community gardeners in achieving community gardens that are successful and sustainable.

We grow Red Wriggler worms (Eisenia fetida) for vermicomposting* food waste and set up worm bins for households, schools, businesses, and institutions. Ellen Sandbeck, the Head Worm Wrangler at Laverme's Worms, is a Federal Contractor, official title: Worm Farm Specialist. At LAVERME'S WORMS, We answer questions; We troubleshoot; we advise. Barrel Depot supplies rain water harvesting systems made from recycled oak wine barrels, 55 gallon plastic barrels and large hundred to thousand gallon tanks. We offer a complete line of accessories including rain chains, water diverters and water cleaners.

What is Blue Thumb?  The Blue Thumb outreach program was created by the Rice Creek Watershed District to help meet water quality goals. Now Blue Thumb has over 70 public, private and non-profit partners spanning Minnesota and western Wisconsin.  If you want to do your part to protect water right in your own yard, the Blue Thumb - Planting for Clean Water program can help. We aim to make it easy for residents to plan, purchase and plant beautiful native gardens, raingardens and shorelines. These cost-effective plantings require little watering and minimal care after established. They also invite birds and butterflies to your yard.
