The Green Job Hunt Online

By Eva Lewandowski

As anyone who has ever looked for a job knows, trying to find both an opening and an employer that are right for you can be difficult. The old standbys of volunteering, interning, and networking in order to build connections and get an “in” at the right company or organization are still highly effective ways of finding work. Finding and applying to job ads online is also an important part of the modern job search. While the internet has made job advertisements in all fields and all locations accessible to us, it can also be somewhat overwhelming and intimidating to know where to start. So where should you look for postings if you’re interested in a green or environmental field?

  • Minnesota Council of Nonprofits– This job board lists openings in all nonprofit fields, and it also contains volunteer, internship, and board member opportunities. Be sure to narrow your search by activity and category in order to easily find the right jobs for you.
  • SEEK Job Board– SEEK is run by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency; they post job openings from across the state and separate them into full-time and part-time/seasonal jobs.
  • MEP Job Board– The Minnesota Environmental Partnership lists job opening in green fields throughout the state.
  • Idealist.org– This site is for individuals and organizations trying to make a difference. In addition to environmental jobs, it also contains listings for social change and other humanitarian causes.
  • TAMU Wildlife and Fisheries Job Board– Texas A&M University hosts one of the largest fisheries, wildlife, and conservation job boards out there. It contains postings from across the world, for jobs ranging from unskilled seasonal work to professorships at major universities. If you want to work with ecology or wildlife, this is the site for you.
  • NAAEE– The North American Association of Environmental Educators has up-to-date listings for environmental educators throughout the continent. If you want to teach others about sustainability and the environment, don’t skip this site.
  • Government Job Boards- Check federal, state, county, and city job sites to find postings for jobs ranging from biologist to environmental specialist to waste coordinators.
