Environmental News Sources

By Eva Lewandowski

2015 is just around the corner, and while there’s a lot to look forward to in the new year, there are also a number of issues to keep an eye on.  There is sure to be new developments on the broad, worldwide issues like climate change and species loss, but we’re also likely to see more action on specific concerns, such as the fate of the newly relisted gray wolf or the status of the Keystone XL pipeline.  Here in the Twin Cities, the ban on Styrofoam in the city of Minneapolis will go into effect, and there will doubtless be continued efforts to expand organics recycling, community solar gardens, and home weatherization.

If you’re like me, you’re eager to follow the developments surrounding these exciting (or depressing) issues.  But where can you get information on the latest environmental news?  Well, you’ll probably have to use more than one source, especially if you are interested in a wide variety of topics.  Here are some suggestions:

-Do It Green! Minnesota’s E-newsletter, Facebook, and Twitter:  We provide updates on local environmental issues and events.  You can sign up for the newsletter or link to our social media pages by scrolling all the way to the bottom of this page.

-SEEK:  This is run through the state of Minnesota, and they offer a great newsletter, events calendar, and website full of updates.  http://www.seek.state.mn.us/

-Your county, city, and neighborhood newspapers or newsletters:  These are great resources for local news, whether online or in print.  In particular, many neighborhoods print and deliver free publications or send e-newsletters that have local information that is hard to find elsewhere.

-Public radio:  Whether you’re listening to NPR or the MPR, on the radio or online, public radio is a wonderful source of information at the state and national level.

-Science blogs:  If you’re interested in cutting edge scientific research but don’t have the background or the time to wade through scientific papers, there are some great blogs out there for you to enjoy.  Some of my favorite science blogs are put out by the Nature Conservancy, SciStarter, and Discover.  http://blog.nature.org/, http://scistarter.com/, http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/

If you can’t find a good news source for a topic that interests you, email us!  We’ll help you find a good place to get updates and information.
