About Us

Mission Statement
The purpose of Do It Green! Minnesota (formerly The Twin Cities Green Guide) is to educate Minnesotans about green and sustainable living and promote building healthy, local communities through:

  • The printed guidebook Do It Green! Magazine and web site www.doitgreen.org
  • Community workshops and skillshares
  • Creating a model eco home for educational tours

Do It Green! Minnesota will ensure that people of all incomes will have access to our publication and activities, and we will serve as a model for other cities and states nation-wide.

Our Organization
Do It Green! Minnesota consists of a core Do It Green Team and over 100 volunteers. Other organizational activities include e-newsletter, skillshares, workshops, information tabling, and working toward a model eco home.

Publication Manifesto
During the entire production of Do It Green! Magazine, the Do It Green! Team made every decision based upon what is best for the environment. Many of us bike, bus or walk for transportation, we use backsides of paper, reclaimed materials and email correspondence as much as possible. The publication itself is printed with soy ink on 100% post-consumer paper from an ethical company that offers only recycled papers. We chose an ecologically-minded Great Printer and used digital imaging that allowed us to electronically send our file directly to the printing press. In addition, the binding is made with non-toxic, water-based glues. Last but not least, the design of the pages and size of the guidebook ensured the least amount of paper waste possible.

Design Manifesto
The main goal of the Do It Green! Minnesota is to promote sustainability. A large part of that goal includes supporting local, small “industries.” These industries are not merely businesses but are often individuals supporting themselves and preserving their autonomy. The resulting attitude is a D.I.Y. (do-it-yourself) mind-set, breaking the cycle of dependence on corporations, technology and governmental policies.

Do It Green! Minnesota walks a fine line between these two worlds; in many ways we are selling a product – a product of thoughts and ideas. We have the frustrating task of competing with mainstream, commercialized culture and media. As a result, the overall design of the Do It Green! Magazine will portray a genuine interest in the hand-made instead of the computer-generated/technology-driven design. Whenever possible, the publication will include hand drawn lettering, illustrations, and diagrams. This often means accepting imperfections (or better yet, relishing them) and reassessing how society views “good design.” Overall, we expect the design of the Do It Green! Magazine to reflect the idea that art and design are not tools to sell and make money but expressive instruments inherent in the human species.

Authors of Articles in the Database
There are over 100 different authors’ voices in the articles in this online database. Many of the articles were written for Do It Green! Magazine and others were reprinted from other publications or web sites. Most of the authors are Minnesotans who wanted to share the information they feel is important for you to know. Their names are listed with the article(s) they wrote and can also be found in the table of contents.

Green Guide Team
The Do It Green! Team donates 100% of their time to our organizational activities on top of holding other full-time jobs or attending school.

Green Beginnings…
Ami Voeltzs’ interest in environmental issues and sustainability first began in 1998 when she lived in Japan and saw all the packaging waste, bags of perfectly good clothes and electronics behind buildings because of a lack of reuse stores or donation opportunities in Tokyo and finding out that there is actually a ‘garbage island’ where trash in the city is sent to! Her passion has always lied in animal rights and seeing this waste in Japan brought opened her eyes to the connection to taking care of all life. When she returned to Minnesota, she was motivated to lessen her environmental impact. Through research, she began to collect the vast amounts of green living information and the ball kept growing involving the community in creating a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called The Twin Cities Green Guide. A group of dedicated community members worked for a year to create the very first Guide to Living Green and Sustainable in Minnesota published in 2000. Since then the Twin Cities Green Guide has expanded our work and renamed ourselves to Do It Green! Minnesota.

Executive Director/Programs Director

I have worked in the environmental field for over 10 years and am currently wearing a number of hats, including my Executive Director role at Do It Green! Minnesota. I also serve as a grants manager for Community POWER www.greenguardian.com/grants as well as assist in planning the Living Green Expo www.livinggreenexpo.org. I am very happily married and in my daily life I make it a priority to get outdoors and reconnect with myself and the beautiful living world out there – running, biking, cross country skiing…I also love to make and enjoy vegan food with friends and family and take every opportunity to visit new areas around Minnesota, the U.S. and the world! I am proud to be with Do It Green! Minnesota and see how it’s grown and kept going all these years (almost a decade!). I have met so many amazing individuals that have been a part of our work and look forward to meeting more.

Do It Green! Magazine Co-Editor

Before starting with DoItGreen! Minnesota in August 2006, I had relocated from Amsterdam and wanted to re-involve myself in the local green community. I quickly realized that the organization is a place where my own voice could be heard but more importantly, somewhere in which I learn new ways to live a more healthy and sustainable life every day. With the resources and "people" in the organization and those I've met while volunteering I feel I am always striving to live better.

Resource Center/Workshop Coordinator

Hi! Years ago, when debating about a choice of college major, I happened to visit a marine life community. I observed an amazing little seahorse whose body was shaped exactly like a piece of seaweed! Then and there, I resolved to pursue study in environmental science--in preparation for helping to protect the wondrous diversity and integrity of those with whom we share the Earth! I’m helping to advance DIG’s vision of a more sustainable world today because of YOU! I feel it’s important for each of us to learn more about how our everyday choices affect Earth’s viability, and to develop a more sensitive personal and community conscience about how these choices impact countless other living beings. DIG helps YOU to realize these goals! Research a new aspect of greener living using our Do It Green! Magazine, and participate in a different green-themed DIG workshop each month. Appreciate the many benefits of a simpler and greener lifestyle, beginning today.

Ever since I learned of the world’s environmental problems as a child I wanted to be part of the solution. Therefore I am very excited to be part of Do It Green! Minnesota. I graduated from St. Olaf College with a degree in biology and environmental studies. When I am not working for Do It Green! Minnesota I work as a teacher at Kinder Care. In my spare time I enjoy camping, walking my two dogs, biking, Frisbee golf, and swimming.

I have found that the keys to life are balance and the pursuit of passion. In my life I strive to maintain equilibrium through yoga, the abundant wonder of nature, personal connections with people and self-awareness. I have kindled my passion for the natural world by working to spread awareness about environmental issues and being a constant learner. Working for Do it Green! Minnesota has been great way for me to continue sharing information, connecting communities and being an advocate for green living.

Board Treasurer

I'm a lifelong Minneapolis resident and graduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in chemistry and professional certificate in solid waste management. I've spent my professional career working in the environmental field, first in compliance for a manufacturing company, then as a community organizer and now as a pollution prevention specialist for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Volunteering for Do It Green! Minnesota has been a great way for me to explore areas of interest outside my profession and learn about issues in our community and new ways to address them while also providing the opportunity to share some of the things I have learned over the years and meet some really keen people that I'm honored to have among my friends.

Resource Center Coordinator

My journey toward sustainable living started in elementary school when I learned about global warming and "reduce, reuse, recycle." Until recently however, I was only practicing the latter. In 2007, after attending the Living Green Expo, I made a promise to myself that I would start - that very day! - to live sustainably. Becoming green has been an ongoing process for me, and I'm excited to join Do it Green! and help others on their journey. I earned a Bachelor of Individualized Study degree in physics, philosophy and theater from the University of Minnesota. I currently work part-time at a law firm. In my spare time I enjoy spending time around the Minneapolis lakes, knitting, vegetarian cooking, and practicing the piano.

Workshop Promotion

When Annie D’Souza isn’t promoting the Do it Green! workshops, she is making a meager living as a freelance writer and Spanish teacher. She enjoys culinary adventures, world travel and freshly waxed cross-country skis. She hopes her work with Do it Green! will encourage others to make sustainable lifestyle changes that she is continually making herself. Annie’s journey toward a greener existence includes second-hand shopping sprees, socially responsible investing and refusing plastic bags - even when she forgets her canvas bag at home*.

Todd Fink

Eco Haus Project Coordinator

Todd's training as an ecologist at Wisconsin taught him to see his lifestyle as a flowchart, with energy and resources moving through it. As a museum developer, teacher and home rehabber, human ecology was a recurring theme. He joined the Eco Haus team since it combined all of his obsessions. At their St. Paul home, he tries, with his wife Pemly, to teach their middle school-aged children that lights go off, too. He installs solar and wind equipment.
